UPSC : Civil Services Exam : Essay Paper

Syllabus : The syllabus provided by Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for Essay paper in Civil Services Exam is very short but specific. It reads as:

"Candidates will be required to write an essay on a specific topic. The choice of subjects will be given. They will be expected to keep closely to the subject of the essay to arrange their ideas in orderly fashion, and to write concisely. Credit will be given for effective and exact expression."


General Instructions : However the general instructions present in Essay paper gives a better view of what UPSC is looking for. It reads as:

" Examiners will pay special attention to the candidate's grasp of his material, its relevance to the subject chosen, and to his ability to think constructively and to present his ideas concisely, logically and effectively. "


Marks and Duration : The Essay paper is compulsory paper. The duration is of three hours. Maximum marks is 200. There will be four essay topics. However candidate will be required to write essay in only one of the four topics provided.


Word limit : UPSC has not prescribed any word limit. But it has been observed that 1,400 -- 2,000 word limit is ideal one. Do not write over 2000 words as you will be moving away from topic. Less than 1400 would mean you have not covered each angle of the topic. So keep it to 1,400 -- 2,000 words.
